Zell am See - Cruising and BBQ on the Lake

Zell am See - Cruising and BBQ on the Lake

After a heavy session of skiing or boarding this summer on the Kitzsteinhorn glacier, a throw stone away from Zell am See, the stomach screaming in hunger, the legs crying out for a well merited lie down, and you craving for a nice and refreshing drink, it is time to let the Zeller See Lake do the job and transport you in an afternoon of, first, culinary satisfaction and then of pure relaxation on a pleasure cruise.

But first things first, you are now hungry and need to abate that horrible feeling, you are too tired and want to escape Zell am See’s buzzing ambiance for a short while. Then what’s best than a nice BBQ as you float along on the lake in one of the Barbecue Donut, your 3 metres of diameter battery powered outdoor motor that carries in its center a low smoke charcoal grill to give you that authentic barbecue Cavour.

These donuts can carry up to 10 people, need no boating license to be operated and the pontoon flotation system means that the donut remains completely safe and stable on the water. So if like me you love a good barbecue, everyone’s summer’s favorite, a peaceful time over the lake far from the Zell am See’s busy restaurants and agitation, as well as scenery so beautiful that even after eating you’ll still be gawping, then the donut experience HAS to be given a try. It’s fun, appeasing and, if you decide to just take your second half, well, it can also be darn romantic. Wouldn’t you agree? Although it also makes for the perfect family outing.

Once you have filled your bellies with grilled chops, steaks and the local sausages; done the siesta such a feast would require you to do, it is time for some more relaxing time. I’m assuming here that you are exhausted and drained out from your tough morning skiing session. If it is so, how about taking a cruise around the lake or just take the ferry across the latter and head for a golfing session on one of their world class course?

Zell am See’s boat services are, this summer available from 10.00am till 5.00pm, everyday of the week. The boat leaves quite regularly from different spots around the lake, and the cruise lasts for about 45 minutes. It’s a great chance to admire Zell am See’s surrounding beauties and treasures in a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere. Furthermore, the fares are fairly cheap and children born after 2005 can cruise for free. A well worth trip.

Alternatively, you can rent a boat, out of a fleet of four, at very affordable prices, and take your friends for a crazy partying session over the lake. The more people you’ll gather for this unforgettable experience, the cheaper it will get. That is if you share the price between all of you. Furthermore, unlike the cruising boats, these can be hired in the evening, providing thus the perfect spot for the perfect summer boat party.

Zell am See is really great, and as you have just read it, offers some pretty original alternatives to your regular summer holiday. Besides, to reach there is very convenient as it is served quite nicely by the different means of transportation. Fly there and you’ll land in Salzburg, only 50 miles away from your final destination. The same applies if you are traveling by train. The closest main international train station is also located in Slazburg and has regular services from there to Zell am See.

As for the braves who are ready to tackle the summer heat, it will depend on where you are traveling from, but again the directions are pretty straight forward, and the journey, provided you have air conditioning, can be quite a pleasant one. I personally will consider spending my summer holidays this year in Zell am See.

Ljubljana - a place to go to this summer

carpet of violets in Tivoli Park, Ljublana, Slovenia

The place to be at the moment could well be Ljubljana, Slovenia. Finally the weather has decided to resume its normal activities. the month of April and May were very cold, and that is not what we are used to here. Look at the pictures above and they show you what we have come to appreciate. Flowers have blossomed and are carpeting the parks with their bright colours, and look at that baby crow. A sign of new life. And let me tell you that under the sun, Ljubljana becomes a totally different place, a place full of life that is well worth visiting. Alternatively, you can drive down the coast and enjoy the very pretty albeit minuscule coastal area of Slovenia.
